"Along with the physical renovations, a major part of our redevelopment plan was to bring in elements reflective of the community, which makes this center an enjoyable gathering place for the local neighborhood," said Steve Boyle, Edens & Avant Managing Director. "When the redevelopment is complete, local residents will benefit from a more engaging shopping experience that will include outdoor dining areas, enhanced landscaping, better parking design, and a pedestrian-friendly environment."
With redevelopment currently underway, plans for the center will include a mix of national and local retailers to serve the diverse needs of the surrounding community. Local residents will soon have new breakfast options with the addition of the Original Pancake House and Bruegger's Bagels. The center will also offer convenient locations for national retailers such as Verizon Wireless along with a major interior and exterior remodeling of anchor tenant Safeway.
"The remodel of the Safeway in West Falls is part of our larger strategy to strengthen existing stores throughout the Washington area," commented Timothy Baker, Eastern Division Vice President of Real Estate for Safeway, Inc. "This particular location exemplifies one of our lifestyle prototypes currently under development throughout our mid-Atlantic portfolio."
The principles of lifestyle shopping will carry throughout the renovated center. "By redeveloping existing properties like The Shops at West Falls Church, we help reconnect people with their neighborhoods," said Edens & Avant President and Chief Investment Officer, Jodie W. McLean. "As with all of our retail development and redevelopment in metropolitan Washington, D.C., we are creating centers that are natural extensions of local communities, so people can have the opportunity to slow down and enjoy their time with family and friends."
