COLUMBIA, S.C., Jan. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Three months after the waters rose in Columbia, SC, the repercussions are being felt by those who lost homes, possessions and loved ones. Houses sit empty, dismantled to dry out, while families await word in temporary housing about their fate.
There are other things happening, too. The community continues working together to rebuild and reopen. Organizations – local and national – are helping those affected with their daily needs.
To help with that effort, EDENS has donated $10,000 each to two nonprofits working towards those goals.
The South Beltline-Gills Creek Community Relief Foundation began as an ad hoc way to help one neighborhood where many residents were suddenly homeless. Volunteers from around the area gathered to clean out furniture and belongings, tear out walls and floors to dry the houses out. In addition, they collected donations of necessities like water, clothes and food. But the effort grew, becoming a central hub to aid flood victims and, eventually, an official nonprofit organization dedicated to helping with recovery. The United Way of the Midlands has long been a bastion of relief to the Columbia area. From natural disasters, to head start programs for children to free medical clinics to those unable to afford insurance, the United Way helps make a difference. Their flood relief efforts began as soon at the waters starting rising, and their long term recovery effort now has a committee working with agencies to offer assistance to the estimated 2000 households without personal or federal aid. It's in gratitude for what these organizations give to relief efforts that EDENS makes their donations. From clean up help, to donations to long-term assistance in rebuilding, the South Carolina midlands will be stronger, and more closely-knit, in the coming years.
